An Expressive Instrument for Intuitive Electronic Music Exploration

If you have ever wanted the tactile joy of an acoustic instrument paired with the limitless possibilities of a synthesizer, Bastl Instruments has created exactly what you are looking for. Launching on Kickstarter, the Bastl Kalimba takes the traditional thumb piano and transforms it into a powerful, hybrid electronic instrument. By capturing your physical movements and plucks, it bridges the gap between acoustic expression and digital sound design.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Name and Creator Bastl Kalimba by Bastl Instruments.
What It Is A unique desktop hybrid synthesizer inspired by the traditional kalimba. It features physical, touch-sensitive tines and uses internal microphones and sensors to drive a versatile electronic sound engine.
KEY FEATURES
Acoustic Interaction The instrument uses twelve touch and velocity-sensitive tines. Two internal stereo microphones capture the physical knocks and plucks to directly excite the synthesis engine.
Hybrid Sound Engine The audio core combines FM synthesis, physical modeling, and stereo digital resonators to create sounds that range from natural acoustic plucks to wild electronic textures.
Motion Control A built-in accelerometer allows you to modulate sound and effects simply by moving, tilting, or rotating the device in your hands.
Performance Tools The device includes an onboard looper, an arpeggiator, and a full effects section featuring delay, reverb, chorus, and distortion.
Extensive Connectivity It easily integrates into larger studio setups with MIDI over TRS, USB type C, and analogue clock inputs and outputs.
Fully Portable A rechargeable battery and a built-in speaker mean you can take the instrument anywhere and start creating music without any extra gear.
REWARDS
Kickstarter Pricing Backers can secure the Bastl Kalimba at a Super Early Bird price of 389 Euros, offering a significant discount from the eventual retail price of at least 550 Euros.
Options Various pledge tiers are available, including special limited edition versions and standard bundles.
Delivery The first production batch of 1500 units is scheduled to begin shipping to backers around December 2026, with wider retail availability planned for early 2027.
CONCEPT
The core concept is Tactile Electronic Performance. Bastl Instruments believes that synthesizers often lack the immediate, expressive feel of physical acoustic instruments. By building an electronic device around the physical act of plucking and tapping, they aim to create a highly intuitive tool where physical gestures directly translate into complex sound manipulation.
INSPIRATION
Bastl Instruments is well known in the boutique synthesizer community for creating quirky and highly interactive gear. After three years of research and development, and extensive testing with electronic artists, the team was inspired to modernize the ancient African kalimba. They wanted to maintain the simple, joyful interaction of the original instrument while injecting it with cutting-edge digital processing and motion-sensing technology.
