BB-777: The Iconic Boombox, Perfectly Recreated

A 270W modern boombox re-imagined from the iconic GF-777. Enjoy every format in stereo sound: from cassettes to latest streaming music.

In an era where every piece of technology seems to rely on a touchscreen or a voice command, the physical, tactile joy of music has largely faded away. We stream invisible files and adjust the volume by tapping smooth glass. But for those who remember the golden age of hip-hop and the sheer presence of a massive, shoulder-mounted stereo, Bumpboxx is bringing the beat back in a big way. The BB-777 is a spectacular, unashamedly huge modern boombox that perfectly recreates the look and feel of a 1980s grail item, but packs it with enough 21st-century power and connectivity to start a block party anywhere you go. It is a love letter to the days when music was something you could touch, carry, and feel in your chest.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Name and Creator: BB-777: The Iconic Boombox, Perfectly Recreated by Bumpboxx.

What It Is: The BB-777 is a massive, premium portable sound system designed as a meticulous homage to the legendary Sharp GF-777 boombox from the early 1980s. It combines nostalgic physical media playback—including dual cassette decks and a CD player—with modern features like Bluetooth streaming, direct-to-USB recording, and a swappable lithium-ion battery.

KEY FEATURES

  • Monstrous 270W Sound: Inside its vintage 28-pound frame sits a 3-way, 6-speaker array featuring two 6.25-inch subwoofers, two 6.25-inch mids, and two horn tweeters that deliver rich, room-filling audio.

  • Play Every Format: It bridges the gap between generations, allowing you to play cassettes, CDs (including MP3 discs), AM/FM and shortwave radio, USB drives, AUX input, and wireless Bluetooth streams.

  • Direct-to-USB Digitization: One of its standout modern features is the ability to record audio directly from a cassette, CD, or the radio straight to a USB drive as clean WAV files, allowing you to easily digitize your old mixtapes.

  • Swappable 15-Hour Battery: Forget hunting for a dozen D-cell batteries. The unit runs on a TSA-approved 97.6Wh rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack that provides up to 15 hours of playtime and can be easily swapped out to keep the party going.

  • Tactile Analog Controls: It restores the satisfying click of heavy switches and the smooth resistance of solid dials for bass, treble, balance, and volume, though it does include a subtle 4.5-inch LCD screen for easier navigation.

  • PA and Recording Ready: It features a built-in microphone as well as two wired mic inputs with dedicated echo and volume controls, making it perfect for MCing, live recording, or karaoke.

REWARDS

  • Kickstarter Pricing: Backers can secure the standard BB-777 for around $649, which is a massive discount from the expected $1,049 retail price.

  • Options: There are bundles available that include a spare battery for $721, as well as a highly exclusive "Founder's Edition" (limited to 777 units in special red or black-and-gold colorways) starting at $749.

  • Delivery: The campaign has already raised millions of dollars, and the first batch of orders is slated to begin shipping worldwide in June 2026.

CONCEPT

The core concept is Physical Sound. The team at Bumpboxx believes that music should be a tangible experience, not just background noise controlled by an algorithm. By combining massive, high-quality audio engineering with real buttons and physical media formats, they aim to emphasize permanence, deliberate listening, and the communal joy of a shared sound system.

INSPIRATION

The project is a direct, loving tribute to the Sharp GF-777, an absolute icon of 1980s boombox culture that frequently appeared in early hip-hop videos and now commands astronomical prices on the vintage market. Bumpboxx founder Rob Owens wanted to create a definitive statement piece to celebrate the company's 10th anniversary. Instead of just making a cheap, hollow plastic replica, they were inspired to build the dream boombox they grew up with, engineering it with the durable materials and modern reliability expected from high-end audio gear today.
