Name and Creator: Realm of Reckoning by IV Studio (designers Zac Dixon, Austin Harrison, and Max Anderson, with art by Reece Parker).
What It Is: A medium-to-heavyweight strategic board game for 2 to 5 players (optimized for 3-5), where players vie for influence in a ruined realm. Over three ages, players draft action cards, deploy acolytes and wardens, gather resources, and engage in high-stakes bidding. What sets Realm of Reckoning apart is its unique "Reckoning" mechanic, where players actively build monuments that define and shift the game's scoring conditions as the game progresses.
Key Features
Player-Defined Victory Conditions: This is the game's most innovative feature. Through "Reckonings," players don't just chase points; they collaboratively (and competitively) determine how points are earned. By placing powerful Monuments on the board, players establish scoring rules that remain in effect for the rest of the game, ensuring that every play-through feels fresh and dynamic.
Engaging Card Drafting & Action Selection: Each round, players draft action cards, choosing wisely to gain resources (coins, acolytes), hire mercenaries or wardens, or advance their influence along five "Pillars" (Guidance, Radiance, Understanding, Equity, and Dominion). These actions are crucial for building up your strength for the inevitable Reckonings.
Strategic Area Control & Influence: Players deploy acolytes into various regions of the ruined afterlife to establish control and gather resources. Managing your presence across the board is key to dominating specific areas and having the resources ready when a Reckoning is triggered in your favored spot.
Tense Bidding System: Reckonings trigger competitive bids in specific regions. Players secretly set their bids using dials, spending a combination of resources like acolytes, coins, mercenaries, or even Pillar influence. The highest bidders not only win valuable rewards but also get to place Monuments that shape future scoring. This creates high-stakes moments of bluffing and strategic resource management.
