Cinematic Widescreen Meets Autofocus: The SIRUI Astra Series
For years, shooting anamorphic that dreamy, widescreen Hollywood look meant sacrificing convenience. You had to deal with heavy glass, manual focus pulling, and expensive rental fees. SIRUI, a brand that has single-handedly democratized anamorphic lenses over the last few years, is back on Kickstarter with a project that might just be their biggest game-changer yet: the Astra Series, the world's first full-frame autofocus anamorphic lens set.
Project Overview
Name and Creator: SIRUI Astra 1.33x FF Autofocus Anamorphic Lenses by SIRUI.
What It Is: The Astra series is a set of three cinema lenses (50mm, 75mm, and 100mm) designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Unlike traditional anamorphic glass, which is notoriously strictly manual focus, these lenses feature fully functional autofocus systems. They bridge the gap between the distinct "movie look" and the run-and-gun usability required by modern solo creators.
Key Features
1.33x Squeeze Factor: This squeeze ratio is the "sweet spot" for standard 16:9 sensors, de-squeezing to a cinematic 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio without excessive cropping or pixel loss.
Full-Frame Coverage: Designed with a 44mm image circle, these lenses fully cover full-frame sensors on Sony E, Nikon Z, and Panasonic L mount cameras.
Autofocus Performance: Equipped with STM motors, the lenses support Eye-AF and subject tracking, a massive advantage for gimbal work or solo shooting where pulling focus manually is impossible.
Fast T1.8 Aperture: All three focal lengths feature a fast T1.8 aperture, allowing for excellent low-light performance and that signature shallow depth of field.
Anamorphic Characteristics: You get the classic oval bokeh and horizontal lens flares. Backers can even choose between Blue (sci-fi/classic) or Neutral (warm/natural) flare coatings.
Compact & Lightweight: Weighing between 600g and 700g, these are significantly lighter than traditional cinema glass, making them drone and gimbal-friendly.
Reward
Early Bird Pricing:
Single Lens: Pledges start at $799 per lens (approx. retail $999).
3-Lens Set: The complete kit (50mm, 75mm, 100mm) is available for $2,399 (approx. retail $2,999) and includes a protective hard case.
Concept
The core concept behind Astra is "accessibility." While SIRUI previously made anamorphic lenses affordable, they were still manual-focus tools that required a certain level of skill (or a dedicated focus puller) to use effectively. By adding autofocus, SIRUI is essentially removing the final barrier to entry, allowing wedding videographers, vloggers, and indie filmmakers to capture a premium cinematic look with the same ease as using a standard photography lens.
Inspiration
The inspiration comes from the evolving landscape of content creation. As crews get smaller and "one-man-band" productions become the norm, gear needs to be smarter and lighter. SIRUI recognized that while creators loved the anamorphic look, they couldn't always afford the logistical headache of manual focus during fast-paced shoots. The Astra series was built to let you "run and gun" without sacrificing that big-screen aesthetic.
