SparkBlocks bring your ideas to life: hands-on STEM circuits with motors, lights, and more that click onto the blocks you love!

For curious minds, aspiring engineers, and anyone who's ever wanted their LEGO creations to do more, SparkBlocks: STEM Blocks that Click onto LEGO Bricks is the revolutionary toy you have been waiting for. Launched by Block & Code on Kickstarter, SparkBlocks seamlessly integrates real-world electronics into your existing building block sets, bringing your imaginative constructs to life with lights, motion, and sound, all while teaching fundamental STEM skills.
Project Overview
Name and Creator: SparkBlocks: STEM Blocks that Click onto LEGO Bricks by Block & Code
What It Is: An innovative educational building block system featuring electronic components (such as motors, lights, and sensors) embedded within blocks that are perfectly compatible with LEGO® bricks. SparkBlocks allows users to build functional creations that light up, move, and react, providing a hands-on and engaging introduction to circuits, engineering, and coding without screens or complex wiring.
Key Features
LEGO® Compatibility: The defining feature of SparkBlocks is its seamless integration with standard LEGO®-style bricks. SparkBlocks are designed with the same stud geometry, meaning they click right onto your existing LEGO® creations, instantly adding electronic functionality to anything you build.
Real-World Electronic Components: Each SparkBlock contains actual electronic circuits, including:
Motors: To make your creations move (e.g., cars, robots, fans).
Lights: To illuminate structures, create indicators, or simulate effects.
Sensors: To make creations react to their environment (e.g., light sensors, touch sensors).
Speakers/Sound Modules: To add audio elements to your builds.
Switches and Resistors: For controlling circuits and learning about basic electronics.
Hands-On STEM Learning: SparkBlocks are designed as a "learning mullet" – fun in the front, serious STEM in the back. Each block is labeled with real electronic symbols, introducing concepts like polarity, current flow, resistance, series vs. parallel circuits, and control systems. Kits often include learning guides that connect builds to foundational STEM ideas through structured, age-appropriate lessons.
No Wires, No Apps, No Frustration: A key advantage of SparkBlocks is its simplicity. The electronic connections are built directly into the blocks, eliminating the need for complex wiring, soldering, or even a screen-based app to program simple circuits. This makes it accessible and less intimidating for younger learners.
Power & Portability: SparkBlocks kits are powered by a low-voltage 3.7V lithium-ion battery, enclosed within a durable 4x8-stud brick. They feature built-in protection circuitry and are easily rechargeable via USB-C.
Endlessly Reusable & Expandable: Unlike single-use kits, SparkBlocks are designed for longevity and reusability. They can be endlessly reconfigured and integrated into new builds, growing with the user's skills from basic circuits to more advanced robotics.
Variety of Kits & Add-ons: SparkBlocks offers different kits catering to various learning levels and interests, from introductory circuit kits to advanced sets with remote controls and more complex components. Themed add-on packs (e.g., walking ant, patrol car, fire truck) allow for specific, engaging builds.
Rewards
Intro to Circuits Kit: One complete Intro to Circuits Kit starts at $119. Think of all the fun that you can have for just $95.....while learning!
Advanced Kit: One complete Advanced Kit at a discounted price of $224. This kit includes everything from the Intro Kit plus more parts, new components (like a remote control, transistors, capacitors), and offers greater creative flexibility. This is the level of kit that separates men/women from boys and girls.
Family Pack: Fun for the whole family and starts at $338
Smart Classroom Kit: A larger bundle designed for educational institutions, providing multiple kits for classroom use.......or if you just have a lot of friends that will not leave you alone when you are getting your learning on. Starts at $796
The Idea
Concept: To bridge the gap between open-ended building play and foundational STEM education by creating electronic building blocks that are fully compatible with existing popular brick systems, making learning about circuits, robotics, and engineering intuitive, engaging, and screen-free.
Inspiration: Co-creators Holden and Mark, both dads, saw a gap in the STEM toy market. They wanted to combine the creative freedom and joy of building blocks with the tangible learning of electronics, without the complexity and high cost often associated with existing robotic or programmable brick systems. SparkBlocks was born from the desire to create a "toy disguised as learning," empowering kids (and adults aged 5 to 105) to bring their brick creations to dynamic life while effortlessly grasping core scientific and technological principles.
